Restylane is an FDA-approved injectable filler that is composed of a biodegradable hyaluronic acid, the same main ingredient in JUVÉDERM® and Voluma. At Aesthetic Enhancements Plastic Surgery, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Armando Soto uses Restylane to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles. The gel is injected in the creases and folds of wrinkles around the nose, mouth, and eyes to create a rejuvenated and youthful contour.
This treatment is a great option for patients who desire a noninvasive facial treatment that will not only improve wrinkles but also enhance facial volume. Dr. Soto will discuss all the differences and benefits of the various facial fillers he offers during a patient’s consultation.

What Areas of the Face Can Be Treated With Restylane Injections?
Restylane is a versatile injectable filler that addresses multiple concerns. The most common treatment areas include the folds and creases around the nose and mouth. Major concerns treated by Restylane include:
Sagging nasolabial folds
Marionette lines
Jowls
Deep dynamic wrinkles
Lip volume and shape
Administering Restylane
A Restylane treatment is quick and involves precise injection where volume is needed. The practitioner will clean the face thoroughly and then mark the injection areas with ink. A fine needle delivers the solution into the skin gradually to reshape and gain youthful contours. The procedure is pain-free with just slight discomfort of the injection prick that can be helped with a numbing cream that is applied prior to treatment. The quantity that is injected depends on how much volume the injection site needs. If the cheek appears to sag, it is filled in until it creates a lifted appearance that is reminiscent of youth. The duration of treatment may last up to 30 minutes.
What To Expect
The results following a Restylane treatment are immediate. There may be swelling and redness around the treated areas, which will subside after several hours. Patients may resume work immediately but must avoid strenuous activities for about 24 hours. They are also advised not to put any pressure on the face and keep the head elevated so that the filler settles well to achieve the intended contours. Results may last up to one full year. This procedure is safe to repeat to maintain the desired results. For most patients, this is about every 6 months.
Alternative Fillers
There are many filler options to consider today. In addition to other hyaluronic acid based fillers, there are also some that contain calcium-based gels, collagen, and polylactic acid. A fat transfer using the patient’s own fat is also popular. The ideal filler must have a function that best matches the patient’s condition. During the consultation, each filler will be discussed and chosen based on the area being treated and patient’s cosmetic goal.
Restylane Lip Filler vs JUVÉDERM Lip Filler
Both Restylane and JUVÉDERM are popular hyaluronic acid-based lip fillers, but they have some key differences:
Restylane for lips:
Firmer consistency
Lasts about 6 months
Enhanced precision for shaping and defining sculpted lips
JUVÉDERMfor lips:
Smoother, gel-like consistency
Lasts 9 to 12 months
Enhanced plumpness with a soft, natural look and feel
During your consultation, Dr. Soto will help you determine wich option best helps you achieve your ideal pout.
Commonly Combined Treatments
Dr. Soto may recommend combining and layering fillers to enhance your results. Full face rejuvenation using various fillers is often referred to as a “liquid facelift,” which is a less invasive alternative to a surgical facelift. Restylane is often combined with popular injectables such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and Sculptra to add lost volume and lift the cheeks.
Other complementary treatments that round out your treatment plan may include laser skin rejuvenation, chemical peels, or microneedling. A customized, combined approach targets multiple concerns and delivers comprehensive results.

Is Restylane or JUVÉDERM the better dermal filler?
One filler isn’t necessarily “better” than the other. Rather, treatment depends on your unique needs. Restylane typically offers more precise shape and contouring while JUVÉDERM lasts longer and has a smoother, more natural feel. Dr. Soto will recommend the option that best aligns with your aesthetic needs and goals.
Fillers or Traditional Lift?
Both correct different cosmetic issues. Surgical lifts are a better option for those whose skin has a significant loss of elasticity. Derma fillers are ideal treatments for those who still have a healthy skin tone, but are beginning to show facial aging symptoms such as fine lines, wrinkles and hollow areas. During the initial consultation, the doctor will discuss in detail all of the options available and the best approach to achieve the patient’s aesthetic goals.
Do the injections hurt?
Most patients experience minimal discomfort during their injections. A topical numbing cream is applied that contains lidocaine for added comfort. While you may feel a quick pinch or pressure as your injections are administered, the treatment is not considered painful.
What should I do following my appointment to ensure the best results?
To optimize your Restylane results, we recommend applying ice to reduce swelling, avoiding touching the treated area for 24 to 48 hours, staying hydrated, and refraining from strenuous exercise and excessive heat. The best way to preserve your results is by closely following your aftercare protocol and maintaining a good skincare regimen.
