Dr. Armando Soto, a board-certified plastic surgeon offers lower body lift surgery to enhance the appearance and shape of the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks. Loss of skin elasticity through aging, gravity, and weight fluctuation can cause unflattering saggy skin that distorts the natural form of the body.

When performing lower body lift surgery, Dr. Soto uses a circumferential 360 incision technique to trim excess skin and re-suspend the remaining skin to tighten and lift the body back to an alluring figure. This procedure may also include liposuction to remove stubborn fat as well. Dr. Soto develops a personalized treatment plan for his patients.

Surgical Technique

A lower body lift is sometimes called a belt lipectomy as the incision is made around the belt area surrounding the lower torso. This incision is customized to the contours of the individual patient and their goals as expressed to Dr. Soto at consultation, with the ultimate goal being to allow a complete, attractive improvement that is natural in appearance. Loose, saggy skin is removed and the remaining skin is lifted and secured by sutures after the abdominal muscles have been returned to their normal anatomical configuration. Once all skin is re-suspended, Dr. Soto will assess the need for liposuction as a means of finalizing the improvement.

During/After The Procedure

The lower body lift procedure is performed with general anesthesia and typically requires an overnight stay in Dr. Soto’s nationally accredited surgical facility, where your care will be supervised by an experienced recovery nurse and a nurse’s aide. Lower body lift surgery takes between 4 and 5 hours in Dr. Soto’s experienced hands. Recovery from Lower body lift surgery is similar to the recovery after abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). Most patients will require prescription pain medication for 5-7 days, with return to light activity after 10-14 days, and full return to unrestricted activity taking 6-8 weeks. You will see the lovely benefits of your lower body lift within two weeks of surgery, but the final outcome will not be evident until swelling has completely subsided, which usually takes 6-8 weeks. Throughout this time period, you will be seen frequently by Dr. Soto and his caring, experienced team to assure you are safe and progressing towards your goals.

Lower Body Lift FAQS

Bad Scars?

A lower body lift creates great results for patients, leaving the body tighter and smoother. As with all surgical procedures, scarring is unavoidable, but patients who follow Dr. Soto’s instructions carefully find that the scars are very thin lines that follow the new contours of the body and fade to a very acceptable and inconspicuous appearance over time.

Painful Surgery?

Lower body lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia in Dr. Soto’s nationally accredited, on-site surgery center. It is common during the post-operation period that the patient will feel some pain and discomfort, with most patients using prescription pain medicine for about a week. Dr. Soto also highly recommends patients opt for intra-operative administration of Exparel. Exparel is an injectable, long acting (3-5 days) pain medicine that Dr. Soto can inject directly into the muscle layer at the time of surgery. Because restoration of the muscular anatomy with sutures is the source of the majority of the pain after lower body lift, injecting Exparel has significantly reduced the amount of pain and disability most patients experience after surgery. This has led to reduced use of narcotic pain medicine, and therefore also reduced the side affects and complications that can arise from their use as well. Once prescription medications have been stopped, you will transition to tylenol.

Does Insurance Cover This?

If it is proven that this surgery is medically necessary to attain a better quality of life, some insurance providers may cover a portion of the cost.  There is no guarantee that coverage will be applicable, and our office does not perform any insurance certification procedures, although we are happy to provide you with your operative records in order to assist you in any claim you may choose to make with your insurance provider.

When to Undergo Surgery?

It is recommended that anyone who is considering a lower body lift should be at or near their goal weight, with a BMI (body mass index) below 30. If the loose skin is caused by pregnancy, it is best to postpone this type of surgery until all additional pregnancies have been completed, as any additional episode of significant weight gain may compromise the results of the surgery.
